Right Deubug I will be the first here.
Oh rats! someone's got in before me.
I recently decided to get a push lawnmower for the paths around my plot.
I got the Qualcast Panther (I'm sure my father used one of these 40 years ago) from Argos in Borehamwood.
I wanted something that is easy to move around so I can use it both at home and on the allotment, something that can enable me to feel good about the healthy exercise I was getting, something that would collect the grass and something that would cope with the longish grass and less than bowling green quality that exists on the allotment.
I was pleasantly surprised with the results.
Pros:
The mower is well made and seems strong enough to cope with the allotment.
It copes very well with long grass (30cm at home, 15cm at the allotment)
The handle detaches easily (squeeze the bottom half together and lift out) leaving you with 3 bits: the grass box, the mower (which is quite light though for safety carry it by the middle of the of the blade cylinder) and the handle which will fit into a car easily.
It is light and easy to operate. On short grass it is possible just to walk along pushing it. On longer grass you have to mow by taking 'bites' out but it still coped remarkably well.
It allows the blades to be adjusted for maximum cutting efficiency. The blades cut like a pair of scissors - the rotary cylinder bears against a plate, the grass being cut by being trapped between the two. The adjusters, one either side of the cylinder allows the plate to be pulled against the cylinder to allow for wear.
You get nice stripes in the grass.
Cons.
You need a 10mm spanner to put the mower together when you take it out of the box. You might also find a 5mm flat blade screwdriver useful but I managed without.
The instructions could be a bit clearer.
You need the 10mm spanner to adjust the blade height.
The adjuster/roller mount is plastic rather than metal. If anything is going to fail with hard use then it is this.
Grass tended to get thrown outside the box and needed frequent raking to the back of the box. This may have been due to the length of the grass that I was cutting though.
All in all I commend this product to you.
